AP: Besides seats, GOP wins sway in 2010 redistricting

Sunday, November 07, 2010 | Comments (0)

From the Associated Press:

Republicans don't just control much of the electoral map. In some cases, they now have the power to redraw it.

Overwhelming victories in statehouses and governors' races across the country this week have placed the GOP in command of redrawing both congressional and legislative districts to conform with Census results. It's a grueling and politically charged process that typically gives the party in power an inherent advantage for a decade, allowing them to preserve current strongholds or to put others in play.

US News: GOP Gains Even Bigger in State Legislatures

Friday, November 05, 2010 | Comments (0)

From US News...

While overshadowed by the Republican gains in the House and Senate, the GOP made even bigger gains in state houses this week, switching at least 19 into Republican hands. So far, the Republicans have picked up a total of 680 seats in state legislatures, a 50 percent gain over what the party did in 1994, the last Republican revolution. And, according to Ed Gillespie, chairman of the Republican State Leadership Committee that funded many campaigns, the GOP gain is more than double what the Democrats took in 2006, when they won back control of the House. "This year's mid-term election reflected the reality that voters are fed up with Democratic policies of increased spending and higher taxes at both the federal and state levels. Republican candidates understood this frustration and capitalized on voter demand for new leadership," Gillespie said in a memo. "This new reality will dramatically impact the states and the country as a whole, including a new direction for state legislative polices and control of the redistricting process." And the number of pickups could reach 682 or more.

NYT: In Albany, Democrats Face Losing the Senate

Sunday, October 31, 2010 | Comments (0)

From the New York Times...

Two years after seizing control of the State Senate for the first time in more than four decades, New York Democrats are in grave danger of losing their narrow majority on Tuesday.

Despite a huge financial advantage and a popular candidate for governor at the top of the ticket, a half-dozen Democratic incumbents are trying to stave off defeat and help the party hang on to its 32-to-30 advantage.

The Democratic victory in 2008 opened the door for a tide of left-leaning policies; Senate Democrats voted to enshrine rights for domestic workers, legalize no-fault divorce and ease Rockefeller-era drug laws.

Reuters: State races to redraw lines of power in Washington

Tuesday, October 26, 2010 | Comments (0)

From Reuters...

As Democrats struggle to keep their majorities in the U.S. Congress in the Nov. 2 elections, the next decade of party control may well be determined by scores of state legislative races also on the ballot.

At stake is the redrawing by state lawmakers of electoral districts for the House of Representatives in Washington -- an adjustment of boundaries every 10 years that tends to favor the party in charge of each state legislature.

The Democratic Party, which has gained seats at the state level since 2004, faces a Republican onslaught expected to alter the balance of power in Congress and in the states.
